TECNALIA designs a smart, portable monitoring and therapy device for REM sleep disorders
SMOTTS is a functional prototype of a diagnosis and treatment device for patients with REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD). This disorder is characterised by the presence of vigorous movements and the absence of muscle atonia during REM sleep.
Smart diagnosis system
This device will use physiological signals from the patient to create a smart diagnosis system based on machine learning: it will help clinicians diagnose and personalise electrostimulation treatment to improve sleep quality.
More than 80% of patients diagnosed with RBD develop some form of neurodegenerative pathology within ten years. That is why early diagnosis and treatment of RBD is so important, as is the need for further research into the links between RBD and neurodegenerative pathologies.
