“The systems that are being developed are being validated in different typologies of buildings located in different climate zones”
TECNALIA leads the development of advanced technologies for the energy retrofitting of buildings through the AEGIR project
TECNALIA is working on the development of modular energy retrofitting packages based on principles of industrialisation, circularity and digitalisation. The project aims to transform the process of building retrofitting in Europe, making it more efficient, accessible and sustainable, in line with the Renovation Wave and the European Union’s climate targets for 2050, with the collaboration of 29 partners from nine European countries.
New physical and digital solutions
The technological approach of AEGIR combines physical and digital solutions that enable a deep, efficient and replicable retrofitting.
Some of the project’s most important innovations include:
- Active envelope technologies, such as hybrid solar panels, heat recovery ventilation systems and second life batteries, which maximise energy self-sufficiency.
- Digital architecture based on a Common Data Environment (CDE), which facilitates the creation of digital twins and predictive building management.
- Modular and digital design, as in the case of a school in Malgrat de Mar (Spain), which combines integrated ventilation strategies, solar analysis and the use of local recycled materials, such as reused eucalyptus wood.
- Methodologies to measure circularity indicators and the use of materials with low carbon content and high recyclability.
- Tools for replicability at European level addressing the political, financial and social frameworks necessary for implementation.
Application in real demonstration environments
The developed systems are being validated in different building typologies (residential, office and education) at four demonstrators located in areas with different climates: Spain, France, Denmark and Romania.
Thanks to this combination of technological innovation and systemic vision, AEGIR has become a European benchmark for sustainable, digital and circular renovation, consolidating TECNALIA as a leader in solutions for next-generation architectural envelopes.
