“This development aims to optimise productivity, increase accuracy in the roof inspection process and improve the safety of personnel and facilities”.

TECNALIA and MATRA develop a platform to digitalise industrial roof inspection and maintenance

TECNALIA, together with the company MATRA, has designed and created a platform to digitalise the inspection and maintenance processes of industrial roofs. One of the results has been to increase the company’s competitiveness by improving safety and efficiency in the roof inspection process.

The tool has improved the accuracy of roof diagnostics and analysis processes, as well as the management of subsequent maintenance work based on the severity of the problems.

Industrial building roofs

The scope of the tool covers the methodology for the inspection of three types of industrial building envelopes: metal sheet roof, deck roof and panel roof.

Regular maintenance of industrial roofs is essential to extend their useful life. It is also necessary in order not to endanger the activity taking place inside, and to be able to identify repair work that may be needed. Thanks to digitalisation, it is possible to optimise this inspection process, improving the accuracy and productivity of this activity.

What is the platform about?

The tool is software that is linked to a portable device and enables engineers to carry out the inspection in a guided, optimal and objective way. Thanks to the experience and contributions of MATRA’s experts in the inspection of this type of asset, indicators have been defined and weighted for each type of damage.

Based on these indicators, algorithms have been developed for the tool to assess the damage and provide a condition index, making the inspection more accurate and objective, with the same expert assessment criteria for all diagnostic processes.

The tool also groups all the data obtained during the inspection, which favours better information processing and management. This includes the generation of reports and management of trends to preserve and increase the company’s technical knowledge in the field of roof maintenance.

In order to design this platform, TECNALIA has been collaborating with Bikuma, a digital consultancy firm, and the aim is to take this development to MATRA (Grupo GTM), a comprehensive maintenance company.
