"The solution developed in conjunction with Telefónica, Würth Spain and QCentroid increases logistical efficiency"
Quantum Computing proves its value in real industrial settings
The solution, developed in collaboration with Telefónica, Würth Spain and QCentroid, reduces cardboard consumption and the volume transported, whilst increasing logistical efficiency.
Quantum computing is already beginning to deliver tangible results for industry. In this context, TECNALIA has worked with Telefónica, Würth Spain and QCentroid to develop an innovative logistics optimisation solution based on quantum computing and artificial intelligence.
- The initiative has been developed at Telefónica’s Javier Echenique Centre for Quantum Technology and Talent in Bilbao. The project has been implemented at Würth Spain’s logistics centre in Agoncillo (La Rioja), one of the most significant industrial settings to validate the potential of these emerging technologies.
- The objective is to address one of the main challenges facing modern logistics: optimising the distribution of products in boxes to reduce operating costs, minimise the use of materials and reduce the environmental impact associated with transport.
A hybrid algorithm to solve a complex logistics challenge
TECNALIA has led the development of a classical-quantum hybrid algorithm capable of addressing the 3D Bin Packing Problem, one of the most complex optimisation challenges in logistics management.
The solution has been implemented in on-line orders consisting of thousands of diverse industrial references, including screws, drill bits, gloves, abrasives and other hardware products. The system dynamically calculates how many boxes to use and the optimal combination of the various sizes available, adapting to the specific characteristics of each order.
The combination of quantum computing, artificial intelligence and advanced optimisation algorithms has led to significant results in a real industrial setting, proving the potential of hybrid architectures to address highly complex challenges.
Measurable results in efficiency and sustainability
During the pilot phase, more than 6,000 orders were analysed, resulting in significant improvements:
- 14% improvement in packaging quality.
- 3% reduction in the number of boxes used.
- 7% decrease in the volume transported.
- More than 6% reduction in cardboard consumption.
These advances contribute both to operational efficiency and to corporate sustainability objectives by reducing resource consumption and optimising logistics processes.
A step towards the industrial adoption of quantum computing
This collaboration reinforces TECNALIA’s commitment to transferring quantum technologies from the laboratory to the business sector through applications that have a real impact. The results obtained show that quantum computing can complement the capabilities of classical computing to solve complex industrial optimisation problems, generating tangible benefits in terms of competitiveness, efficiency and sustainability.
Furthermore, this experience opens up new opportunities to apply these skills in areas such as advanced logistics, operations planning, supply chain management and other optimisation-intensive processes.
