The HARPOONERS success story: the total electrification of ships and the development of advanced hybrid technologies are key solutions for more sustainable shipping

International maritime transport faces the challenge of significantly reducing its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions to help fight climate change. In this context, the partial and full electrification of ships, as well as the development of advanced hybrid technologies, have become key solutions for more sustainable shipping.

    • On 13 May, TECNALIA, in collaboration with the company Power Electronics, is organising this technical webinar in which the latest developments in power conversion systems applied to maritime transport will be presented, taking as a reference the success story of the European HARPOONERS project.
    • Hybrid technologies are particularly relevant for long-distance vessels, where diesel engines typically power a three-phase alternating current (AC) electrical grid that supplies power to propulsion, hotel services and other ancillary systems.
    • The integration of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the order of megawatts of power smoothes consumption peaks, improves the overall energy efficiency of the system and enables port operations with zero emissions.

Practical overview and results of the HAPOONERS success story

The webinar will address the key role of power electronics, and in particular the DC/AC converters that enable the integration of batteries with the ship’s electrical grid.

    • The focus will be on modular multi-level architectures based on Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB), a highly attractive solution for ship electrification due to its modularity, scalability and high efficiency.
    • The session will offer a practical and applied vision of the results obtained in HARPOONERS, highlighting its industrial potential and its contribution to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
