"The solution combines a hollow-shaft rotor electric machine"

EGILE MECHANICS and TECNALIA have developed a pedal assist solution for high-performance e-bikes

The Hazitek BIKING initiative has enabled a new pedal assist solution to be developed and validated, based on a compact, high torque density motor with advanced control electronics and smart sensors for the next generation of road and mountain e-bikes.

EGILE MECHANICS and TECNALIA have worked on the Hazitek BIKING project to develop a pedal assist solution that enhances the integration, weight, noise levels and performance of e-bike drive systems.

The solution combines a hollow-shaft rotor electric machine, aligned coaxially with the pedalling shaft, and a cycloidal transmission designed by EGILE MECHANICS. This design allows for more compact integration and looks more like a conventional bicycle.

The lightest, most compact and efficient pedal assist system

    • As part of the project, TECNALIA has developed the control and power electronics, the embedded motor control software and the pedal assist algorithms in order to provide a more natural, precise and efficient user response. It has also been involved in the functional validation of the system through bench tests and bike trials.
    • BIKONE has supplied the torque and cadence sensor integrated into the system, helping to improve the quality of the data used by the control unit and providing assistance that is better adapted to the cyclist’s effort.

The tests carried out have validated the demonstrator in real conditions, with promising results for future phases of industrialisation and transfer to market. The project also contributes to the development of more sustainable and advanced mobility solutions for the e-bike sector.
