"The initiative brings together eleven Basque companies and addresses one of the main challenges of industrial decarbonisation"
The H2SKID initiative aims to design and build an experimental 1.25 MW portable electrolyser, which will enable green hydrogen to be supplied to industrial users without the need for fixed infrastructures
The initiative, coordinated by Sarralle, brings together eleven Basque companies and addresses one of the main challenges of industrial decarbonisation: having enough renewable hydrogen to carry out tests under real operating conditions.
The need for alternatives to natural gas is growing in sectors like steel, foundry, cement and glass.
- H2SKID offers a "plug & play" solution, contained in two modules, one for hydrogen production and the other for hydrogen compression and storage, which facilitates extended test campaigns directly in the plant.
- This enables hydrogen-fuelled industrial equipment to be validated in high temperature applications, overcoming the current lack of piped supply networks.
The portable electrolyser will be validated in a real industrial environment, specifically at the ArcelorMittal plant in Sestao, where its efficiency will be evaluated in demanding heating processes, such as the ladle preheating burners and the tunnel kiln. Furthermore, the initiative will drive the development of a local value chain around critical components of the electrolyser, power electronics and associated compression and storage systems.
H2SKID Consortium
TECNALIA is participating in H2SKID as an actor of the RVCTI, providing technological knowledge to promote research into the key components of the electrolyser, its auxiliary systems and its control and operation.
- It contributes to improving the efficiency, reliability and safe integration of these technologies, facilitating their validation in real environments and accelerating the implementation of green hydrogen in Basque industry.
- This contribution reinforces our commitment to solutions that drive the energy transition and boost the competitiveness of the industrial sector.
H2SKID is a collaborative industrial research project involving the following entities: Sarralle (Coordinator), ABC Compresores, ArcelorMittal Sestao, Matz-Erreka, Flubetech Coatings, Mugape, Sener, Team Group, Torraval Cooling, Tubos Reunidos Group, Zigor Corporación, TECNALIA, and it is subsidised by the Basque Government’s Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability through the HAZITEK programme.
