This system will be in the form of a collar in order to provide a more accurate measurement of several essential parameters selected by the clinical team.

Between 20% and 48% of the adult population is affected by poor sleep quality. 10% of cases suffer from chronic sleep disorders: this results in a poorer quality of life, mood swings and changes in state of mind, higher risk of accidents, increased stress, cardiovascular disturbances and hypertension, and metabolic disorders.

Wearable technologies are increasingly being used to monitor sleep, although existing devices on the market significantly overestimate total sleep time, and have not yet managed to obtain the mix of physiological parameters, post-processing and sensor location to achieve information comparable to polysomnography (PSG).

Ergonomic monitoring device

TECNALIA is working on developing an ergonomic device for monitoring sleep quality and quantity validated by polysomnography. This system will be in the form of a collar in order to provide a more accurate measurement of several essential parameters selected by the clinical team. It will also process physiological signals with artificial intelligence, supported by a cloud-based platform and an app to inform users.

The main benefits of the device are as follows:

  • Portable monitoring system: should measure total sleep time, intra-sleep awakenings, sleep phases, by detecting muscle tone (EMG), activity (accelerometry), heart rate (ECG) and body temperature.
  • Smart environment/app: based on commercial sensors and the use of a mobile phone. Parameters such as ambient temperature, light, sound, etc. are obtained. It includes user questionnaires and a feedback system for changing habits.
  • Machine learning platform: unsupervised self-learning system based on all the information from the two points above. Obtains the user's sleep profile and prepares a response in the form of recommendations for changes in habits.
  • Portable actuation system: transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device. It helps relaxation, facilitates sleep and increases sleep quality.
