“TECNALIA is leading key tasks in robotics, production resources and fire safety”
TECNALIA promotes the automation of energy renovation of buildings in the European RENOMIZE project
TECNALIA is actively taking part in the European project called RENOMIZE (Renovation with automation and optimisation of processes and products): an ambitious collaborative initiative that aims to industrialise and automate the processes of deep energy renovation of buildings. This transformation is key to accelerating the renovation of Europe’s building stock and achieving the EU’s climate goals.
RENOMIZE addresses the comprehensive optimisation of the renovation process, both on site and in the factory, covering the entire life cycle of building systems: from design, delivery and maintenance, to dismantling and recycling. The project develops innovations that will allow cost savings of more than 25% and significant reductions in execution times.
TECNALIA is developing tasks in two strategic areas
- Automation and production resources: the team led by Mariola Rodríguez is working on the design of robotic solutions and automated processes for the installation of industrialised panels on site, reducing time, costs and labour risks.
- Fire safety: Arritokieta Eizaguirre, from the Fire Safety Laboratory, is contributing to the design and validation of safe construction solutions, assessing the fire behaviour of industrialised façade systems. According to Arritokieta: “The integration of fire safety criteria from the earliest stages of design is essential in order to ensure that industrialised solutions are not only efficient and sustainable, but also safe for people and buildings”.
During the first phases of the project, TECNALIA has participated in technical discussions on anchoring, industrialised panel design, on-site process automation and demonstration of innovations, as well as visits to pilot factories and buildings that will serve as real demonstrators.
Some of the project’s most important innovations include:
- Decision support tools for site preparation and selection of HVAC and renewable technologies
- Advanced spatiotemporal planning to optimise construction processes
- New anchoring systems and connections between panels, adapted to automated assembly and disassembly
- Self-positioning systems and robotic effectors for the autonomous placement of anchors and panels
- Progressive optimisation of factory automation to improve quality and reduce costs
The project, coordinated by JOANNEUM RESEARCH and made up of 13 partners from nine countries, is being carried out in collaboration with leading technology centres and companies such as VITO, BuildUp, Litobox,Fraunhofer, ETH Zürich, EPFL, and TECNALIA, among others.
