"TECNALIA is playing a key role thanks to the capabilities of its CIRMETAL infrastructure"
The steel industry is facing one of the greatest challenges in its history: reducing its environmental impact and moving towards more sustainable production models
Solutions that make it possible to make better use of available resources and reduce carbon emissions, while maintaining the sector’s competitiveness, need to be developed to achieve this. CircSmeltSteel was set up with this aim in mind.
The project is funded by the European Horizon Europe programme and started on July 1, involving 26 partners from various European countries. Over the next four years, the consortium will work to harness the potential of secondary materials and move towards a more sustainable, competitive and resilient European steel industry.
New ways of using metallurgical by-products
CircSmeltSteel’s focus is on developing and validating new ways of using metallurgical by-products as secondary raw materials in steel production with electric furnaces.
- Analyses will be carried out to determine how these materials influence the chemical composition, microstructure and properties of the steel produced.
- The results will provide the knowledge needed to move towards an increasingly circular steel production process.
A leading infrastructure for the circularity of metals
TECNALIA is playing a key role thanks to the capabilities of its CIRMETAL infrastructure, a leader in the circularity of metals, from where it will spearhead the application of advanced technologies for pre-processing materials, such as mixing, agglomeration and briquetting, and develop efficient heating solutions based on electrical technologies.
TECNALIA will also produce steel ingots, which will be used to assess the quality of the material produced and validate the metallurgical processes developed during the project.
