TECNALIA is going to have a new building to be used for smart and sustainable mobility by 2026

    • The research and technological development centre is opening this 7,000 m2 infrastructure, which will be part of the Mubil hub and will hold three laboratories to be used for air mobility and clean propulsion technologies like hydrogen.
    • Today, the Deputy General of Gipuzkoa, Eider Mendoza; the Mayor of Donostia-San Sebastian, Eneko Goia; the Chairman of TECNALIA, Alex Belaustegui, and the Managing Director of TECNALIA, Jesús Valero laid the building’s first stone.

8 July 2025 TECNALIA research and technological development centre is starting work on its new building for sustainable mobility and energy transition, which is expected to be up and running by the end of next year. This new building, which will be part of the Mubil hub, will be located in the Eskuzaitzeta industrial estate in Donostia-San Sebastián. It will be a benchmark for the transformation and adaptation of companies and society to new forms of mobility and transport.

The first stone of the building was laid today, in a ceremony attended by Eider Mendoza, Deputy General of Gipuzkoa; Eneko Goia, Mayor of Donostia-San Sebastián; Álex Belaustegui, President of TECNALIA; and Jesús Valero, Managing Director of the centre.

These new 7,000 m2 facilities will house three laboratories: Urban Mobility Lab, focused on air mobility; and H2 Technologies Labs, two laboratories for clean propulsion, generation, distribution and storage technologies, like hydrogen. These labs will enable the development of new technological solutions, as well as testing and validation of prototypes, from new materials to digital systems and solutions based on advanced technologies.

To make this possible, TECNALIA has invested €14 million and has had been backed by Gipuzkoa Provincial Council. In addition, a team of around 80 professionals will be in charge of this new space, which will also be a hub for attracting talent in the fields of mobility, energy transition, digitalisation and sustainability.

A benchmark for smart and sustainable construction

This infrastructure will be built according to smart construction criteria and will have a bioclimatic strategy to reduce energy consumption. In this sense, solutions and materials will be used to minimise the carbon footprint, both in the construction phase and throughout its life cycle, and it will have a mobile façade to reduce energy consumption.

As part of the Mubil hub, this future building will aim to promote Gipuzkoa internationally in the field of electromobility, boosting collaboration with actors and companies in the surrounding area.
