“The initiative focuses on the design of new bio-based water and oil repellent coatings”

The TORNADO initiative has been launched to drive the transition to a safer and more sustainable circular economy

The project will focus on the design of new bio-based water and oil repellent coatings, avoiding the use of toxic substances, such as perfluoroalkyls and polyfluoroalkyls (PFAS).

To fulfil this goal, the TORNADO project will follow three interconnected but distinct lines of innovation. Firstly, new water and oil repellent biomonomers will be developed. Secondly, new organic and bio-based water and oil repellent hybrid coatings will be designed. And thirdly, these new coatings will be designed according to Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) criteria.

The new coatings will be validated in three different sectors: textiles, packaging and kitchenware

A roadmap will be developed to help define standardisation protocols for new coatings. The actions to be carried out will guide the industry in both the development of more sustainable products and the implementation of the SSbDcriteria.

This project is an important step towards creating a safer and more sustainable circular economy. It shows how innovation can help address some of the greatest environmental and public health challenges of our time.
