The Irizar i6S Efficient Hydrogen vehicle receives the "Spanish Coach" award

TECNALIA develops the management and control units of the powertrain components for the Irizar i6S Efficient Hydrogen coach

The new Irizar i6S Efficient Hydrogen coach has received the “2024 Coach of the Year” award in Spain. It was launched at the Busworld International Trade Fair in 2023.  The event, which was held in Madrid, was attended by members of the sector's main associations and institutional representatives.

The i6 Efficient Hydrogen was developed by Irizar, in conjunction with leading companies and technology centres. TECNALIA developed the management and control units of the coach's main powertrain components, as well as the energy generation components and optimised the system's energy management as part of the European Coach2 project.

The vehicle is currently undergoing a variety of tests. The accumulation of knowledge and experience will be key in terms of shaping the future range of hydrogen vehicles.

The vehicle has a range of up to 1000 km and minimum refuelling times of around 20 minutes. This means that users will not have to change the way they operate and will be able to continue with their usual routes and timetables. In addition, Irizar hydrogen vehicles have the capacity to drive in electric mode at specific times when required.

Durability of the components

The high durability of the coach's main components is also noteworthy. The batteries will stay with the vehicle throughout its lifetime, and the fuel cell will require maintenance, without having to replace the component, after around 30,000 hours of operation, depending on the type of routes and use.
