"Cement will be more sustainable, requiring less energy for its production and it will be made from waste"
We work with companies in the construction sector to develop innovative and more sustainable materials from waste
TECNALIA is part of the consortium of companies and research centres leading the CO2MCHRETE initiative: CO2 mineralised in cement and concrete from thermally activated waste in slag.
The aim is to revalue construction waste to improve the cement and concrete used in this sector. We will work towards the decarbonisation of the construction sector through the development of innovative materials and carbon capture technologies.
More sustainable cement
Cement to be developed as a result of this initiative will be more sustainable, as less energy will be required for its production. Furthermore, the cement will be made from waste from other industries, fostering circularity in construction.
Collaboration between companies, research centres and universities
The consortium is made up Técnicas Reunidas, Cementos La Cruz, Ferrovial, Urdecon and Valoriza; TECNALIA and CTC research centres; and the Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria and Cartagena Polytechnic universities.
CO2MCHRETE is one of the initiatives that has obtained support in the last call of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities’ Missions programme through the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI).
