TECNALIA has adapted these platforms to implement and integrate different potential applications and sensors that measure temperature, humidity and brightness in the environment.

TECNALIA is working with MASERMIC and ETRA to develop automated mobile ground platforms to assess the state of the infrastructure; road surfaces and lighting in the area where the mobile platform is operating.

The MASERMIC monitoring demonstrator is a vehicle with a number of sensors that measure temperature, humidity and brightness in the environment. Another sensor checks the condition of the road surface and is responsible for detecting potholes and bumpy surfaces. All of these values are communicated remotely, and alarms are triggered if the values are not within the set ranges.

This mobile platform has both drive and steering fully integrated into the wheel; this helps to substantially reduce the mechanical complexity, as the steering column and transmission of a conventional vehicle are replaced by electronics and communication buses. This feature gives the platform great flexibility, as the wheels could be fitted to any type of chassis.

The initiative uses autonomous driving and sensing functions, both of which are highly valued in industrial and normal vehicles.
